{mister barrington album packaging and branding}

Mister Barrington is a band lead by singer-songwriter-piano virtuoso; Oli Rockberger along with producer-drummer; Zach Danziger and bassist; Owen Biddle (of The Roots).  Both the project and the branding went through a number of different looks as we were creating the images while the album was being recorded (an unusual process).

At one point in the process Mister Barrington was an animated character based on the feel of the early Tin-Tin comics and P.G. Wodehouse covers.  Eventually we utilized the concept images by noted NYC/London photographer Lloyd Bishop.

The final product has a clean and classic feel, while retaining some of the enigmatic quality necessary for the albums musical direction.

The Village Voice Oli Rockberger was holding in the original photography was replaced with a hybrid of vintage London newspapers.   The newspapers name was changed to the "Daily Dream" as a reference to the albums original title " Mister Barrington's Daydream".

I created two "teaser" pieces for promotional use.  "Mister B's reflection" and "Toast with Jam" were created to start seeding the Mister Barrington esthetic while the first tracks were released online and the band began performing live.

{Putting the art back in cover-art with Ingrid Chavez}

It's great when a client is interested in doing something that pushes the boundaries, artistically.  I help my clients reach that balance between something that makes a strong artistic statement and something that is truly commercially viable.

When I first started working with singer-songwriter Ingrid Chavez, we both talked about wanting the packaging for "A Flutter and Some Words", her first full length release since her Paisley Park/Warner Brothers debut, to be a piece of art in itself.

After bouncing numerous concepts around, We eventually invited painter Frank Verdeja, also known as El Perdido, into the mix.  Frank created a large piece for Ingrid' cover as well as a number of smaller related pieces.  The way Frank creates (with each element of the painting done on a different layer of Lucite) allowed us tremendous flexibility with the design.  Frank also provided us with song titles in his own handwriting to use throughout.

Ingrid spoke with me at length about this record being representative of the blending of her dream world with her waking one. So to help illustrate the atmospheric nature of the album, I wanted to blend and incorporate photography of Ingrid's real world with the magical abstract world that Frank had so beautifully created.

I included one image by Ingrid, a artful photographer herself, and one image grabbed from a music video for the lead single, shot by Italian director Marzio Mirabella. Again, we were trying to really establish a cohesive brand across all of her new output.  I worked the images until I felt they blended and supported Frank's artwork in a way that represented what Ingrid was trying to communicate.

When it came to choosing fonts, we wanted something, simple and elegant but strong and crisp to balance out the script of Frank's handwriting.

The albums were printed by Groovehouse in California who was recommended by Ingrid's management Stef Angel Music Group. We chose a matte finish on recycled card stock with soy and vegetable based dyes. Most printers are offering these options now and green design is important to both Ingrid and myself but above that, the finished look is really high-end and stands out.

When it came time to release a digital EP of remixes for the album, I wanted to approach the artwork in the same way a producer might approach a remix.  I went back to Frank to get some of his original concept sketches of what would become the album cover.  I then chose a number of textures and colors that would compliment the original project but remain distinct to this incarnation.

In an age when digital downloads, file sharing and the like are dominating the record industry, especially with indie artists, it's important to give your audience a reason to buy your music, great original artwork certainly helps!
